The Fort Scott Greyhounds traveled to Independence, Kansas on Saturday night to take on the ICC Pirates. Both teams were coming off recent losses, and were hoping to rebound with a victory.
Fort Scott got off to a quick start. Dalton Rose connected on a three point attempt, and Devon Knight added a basket of his own to give the Greyhounds a 5-0 lead. Independence was forced to call a timeout.
The Pirates battled back, and the score was tied at several occasions during the first half of the game. At the first half media timeout, Fort Scott led by 5, 18-13. During the final 5:20 of the first half, the Greyhounds went on a 12-0 run, which included 4 free throws from Will Harrington, a basket by Devon Knight, and three point baskets for both Evan Brull and Dalton Rose. At halftime, Fort Scott led by the score of 23-35.
The Greyhounds played great defense throughout the game, and to start the second half they held the Pirates scoreless until the 16:20 mark. The lead hovered around 10 points throughout most of the second half, and Fort Scott would eventually win by 14 points, 51-65.
"Tonight we came out and played great defense and knocked down the open shots we had, we had some shots fall the first half that didn't fall the last game which always helps. The main thing that I thought we did well tonight was that we got some deflections on their passes and our defensive rotation was gret tonight." said Head Coach Michael Cook. "We're still improving as a team, but the thing about tonight is that we showed we're close to being the team that I thought we could be the beginning of the year."
The Greyhounds defense led the way, forcing 17 turnovers. Tyler Owens had 5 steals, while Will Harrington had 3 and Xavier Hunter had 2. Three Greyhounds scored in double-digits. Will Harrington had 16, Quincey Butler had 14, and Dalton Rose scored 12. Harrington led the team in rebounds, with 6, while Devon Knight grabbed 5. Will Harrington also led the team in assists. Fort Scott shot 49 percent from the field on 20 of 41 and connected on 8 of 16 threes. This was the first win for the Greyhounds at Independence since 2007.
Fort Scott will return to Arnold Arena to play it's next three games, beginning Wednesday night with a match-up against Neosho County. Tip-off is at 7:30pm.
