Hounds Hold Off Wentworth For Fourth Straight Win

Fort Scott Greyhounds held off a tough and disciplined Wentworth Military Academy to get their 4th straight win on the season.

Leading the way for the Greyhounds was Sophomore Austin Danner scoring 25 points off the bench, including the go ahead basket with 6.3 seconds left in the ball game. Sophomore Gary Floyd stole the inbounds pass from Wentworth and then made two free throws to seal the win for the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds led by twelve at half, but Wentworth fought their way back into the game due to some cold shooting from the Greyhounds and tough defense from Wentworth.  The Dragons tied the score at 61- 61 with 9:53 left in the game and then went ahead by two points with six minutes left in the game.

Neither of the teams could pull away and traded baskets until Kevin House made a jump shot with 55 seconds left in the game.  The Greyhounds played tough defense the next possession forcing the Dragons to miss their next basket attempt with 31 seconds left in the game.  The Greyhounds then called timeout to set up a play for Austin Danner to make a midrange jump shot to put the Greyhounds ahead for good.

The Greyhounds only shot 39% from the field and 38% from the three point line, but what helped the Greyhounds secure the win was shooting 82% from the free throw line and only committing 11 turnovers for the game.  Scoring in double figures was Austin Danner with 25 points, James Fleming with 19 and Tyler Adams with 15 points, connecting on 4 of 7 three point attempts.

"We had several players that stepped up tonight; I thought that when the game was on the line, our defense stepped up and we got crucial stops.  I am proud of the way our guys didn't quit and fought to pull out the win," Fort Scott head coach Michael Cook said.
