Greyhounds Rally Late But Fall in Second Overtime to Rival Coffeyville

It was an up and down day at Frary Field for the Fort Scott Greyhound football as they led the Ravens of Coffeyville (KS) Community College early, and then rallied late in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime before eventually falling to the visitors in the second overtime period 34-28.

After tying the game up at 28-28, the 'Hounds had a chance to go ahead late in the third when kicker Mark Whitrock lined up for a 32 yard field, but Whitrock's kicked was short of the uprights and sent the game into overtime.

The first overtime started with the Greyhound defense coming up big on a fourth and short play by stopping the Ravens of a first down and turning the ball over to the 'Hounds for their turn with the ball.  On their first play of the first overtime, Fort Scott's running back Stanley Hagan ran for 7 yards to the 18 yard line. After the Hagan run, 'Hound quarterback Owen Jordan's pass was intercepted sending the game into the second extra session.

The Greyhounds received the ball first in the second overtime. After three Jordan incompletions, Whitrock lined up for a 42 yard field goal to put the home team ahead but the Lenexa (KS) freshman kicker could not get proper footing to make the kick sending it wide left and short giving the Ravens their shot in the second overtime.

In the second extra stanza for Coffeyville, quarterback AJ Derby completed one out of two passes before Miami (FL) running back Andre Allen broke loose up the middle to score the game winning score from 13 yards out giving Coffeyville the 34-28 victory.

Early on in the contest it looked as if the Greyhounds, 1-2 conference and 1-4 overall, were going to run away from the Ravens by scoring the first two touchdowns, a Jordan five yard pass to St. Louis (MO) sophomore wide-out Courtney Ward and a Hagan five yard run for the second score. Whitrock added the PAT kicks to make it a 14-0 Fort Scott lead.

Jordan, a 6-1 180 pound sophomore from Columbus (KS), had his best game as a Greyhound quarterback throwing for 266 yards and three touchdown passes. Jordan had 26 completions on 49 pass attempts.

Coffeyville scored with just over a minute left in the first half when Derby, a 6-5 230 pound sophomore from Iowa City (IA) connected with receiver Gage Billingsley from 15 yards out to cut the lead to 14-7 going into halftime.

The Ravens came out of the locker room and got on the board first when defensive back Jamarcus Howard stepped in front of a Jordan pass and raced for 45 yards for the visitor's second score tying the game at 14-14.

After two fourth quarter scores by the Ravens, the Greyhounds mounted their comeback by the way of Jordan's arm; first with a 26 yard touchdown pass to Ward and then a 10 yard pass play to St. Louis (MO) receiver Terrence Hoskin tying the game at 28-28 with just under five minutes left in regulation.

Hagan, the Nashville (TN) product ran hard through the saturated ground finishing the game with his third 100 plus rushing game in four tries as a Greyhound, ending with 133 yards on 44 carries and 1 touchdown score. Hagan now has rushed for 625 yards and is second in the NJCAA with 157 yards per game.

Defensively for the Maroon and Gray, sophomore linebacker Stephan Martin was a strong contributor again with a game high 12 tackles, 6 solos and 6 assists. Fellow linebacker mate Marceice Jackson finished with 7 tackles.

Defensive lineman Demetrius Hill, a 6-3 245 pound freshman from Kankakee (IL) led the powerful defensive line group with 10 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and also knockdown one pass.

Next up for the Greyhounds will be the Dodge City Conquistadors, 0-3 conference and 0-4 overall, of Dodge City (KS) Community College in a Jayhawk Conference game scheduled for a 1:00pm kickoff on Saturday at Frary Field in Fort Scott, Kansas.
