At the beginning of the 2012 season, the Fort Scott Community College volleyball team set a goal to win a national championship in the classroom. Finishing with a cumulative 3.6 GPA, they knew that they would finish very high. Today, the NJCAA announce that the Lady Hounds finished 2nd in the nation behind Central Community College – Columbus who finished with a 3.61 GPA. The Greyhounds were .01 away from achieving their goal.
The NJCAA also announced individual Academic All-Americans today. Among those honored were Ali Cure and Kate Smith, both sophomores for the Lady Hounds. Ali Cure, from Baxter Springs, KS, earned a Superior Academic Achievement Award (3.8-3.99 GPA). Kate Smith, from Liberty, MO, also earned a Superior Academic Achievement Award (3.8-3.99 GPA).
"I am so proud of these young ladies. We set a lofty goal in the fall and they worked every day to achieve their goal. We were so close to getting that championship! Kate and Ali were such strong leaders for us in the classroom! I am so happy that they got their individual goals to be Academic All-Americans. We stress academics so much in our program and it is great to get a result like a 3.6 to understand that your student athletes have bought into how important they are as well! This is a good foundation for our next year goal, which is to win a national championship," said Coach Hill.
