The Fort Scott Greyhounds Volleyball Team started their season off strong with a 4-0 record this weekend as they hosted the first tournament of the season. The Hounds took on Clarendon Thursday night at 6:30 and picked up their first win in a tough five set match (25-16, 25-14, 18-25, 20-25, 15-11). Friday brought two more wins as they defeated Labette in three sets (25-17, 25-18, 28-26) at 1:00 and Cedar Valley in three sets (26-24, 25-20, 26-24) at 7:00. The Hounds clenched their undefeated record by defeating SE Nebraska Saturday at 4:00 in four sets (23-25, 25-14, 25-15, 30-28).
Returning setter Taylyn Schwartz was the stat leader for the Hounds this weekend with 161 assists, 54 digs, 16 kills, and 2 aces, which earned her the title of Tournament MVP. Returning middle Ashley Bell led the team in kills with 47, and also put up 14 digs and 15 blocks. Returning right side Ali Cure helped the team earn their 4-0 record with 42 kills, 76 digs, 8 assists, and 5 aces. Bell and Cure were also named to the all-tournament team. Freshman Haylee Toothman from Shawnee, KS also put up an impressive performance with 91 digs, 38 kills, 9 aces, and 7 blocks.
"The girls are working hard…we did a lot of good things this weekend, but we also have a lot of things to work on. We will get back to work on Monday, preparing for our first conference game on Wednesday versus Highland," said Coach Hill. The Hounds are back in action at home Wednesday at 5:30 PM as they take on Highland for the first conference game of the season.
