The Fort Scott women's basketball team led off the doubleheader on Wednesday night at Arnold Arena with good pace but moments into the first quarter, Shanessiea Walters went down with a scary knee injury and did not return. That put two starters on the shelf early in the season and St. Mary's JV was able to hold off the Greyhounds 78-74.
FSCC (1-2) at one point trailed by 10 in the first quarter but battled in the first half and only trailed 34-30 at halftime. The Greyhounds would win the third quarter outscoring St. Mary's by three and entered the fourth quarter trailing by just one. FSCC would hang tough but came up just short losing for a second time this season.
The Greyhounds were led in scoring by Ally McKenzie with 17 points. Three others topped double figures with Arkiarra Clark, Jade Winter and Sarah Kelley scoring 12, 11 and 10 points respectively. Clark led FSCC grabbing eight rebounds and Jada Perry led the way with six assists along with eight points and four rebounds.
St. Mary's JV was led in scoring by Tiani White who poured in a game high 32 points.
The Fort Scott men's basketball team would follow the women with their second win of the season 84-73, improving to 2-3 overall.
Tyler Zinn led the Greyhounds with 27 points while also leading the team with five steals. Marshawn Williams, Dontrell Sanders and Jayden Davis each finished in double figures with 15, 12 and 10 respectively. Sanders finished with a double double leading FSCC with 10 rebounds.
The women are at Kansas City Kansas Community College this weekend to take on Penn Valley on Friday and William Woods on Saturday. The men are back in action on Monday against Park University JV.
