After being on the road for the last six games and losing five of those six games, the Greyhounds finally got back to the friendly confines of Arnold Arena against the Neosho County Panthers from Chanute, KS.
Neosho County came into the contest posting an overall record of 6-7 and o-1 in conference play, but had two of the best shooters in the conference on their squad in Jamie Batish and Jeremy Nolen.
"Our focus tonight was to play team defense and try to contain those two players and not let them have careers nights against us," Fort Scott head coach Michael Cook said.
The game plan seem to work for most of the first half with Jamie Batish only having three points and even though Jeremy Nolen had scored fifteen points, the Greyhounds played solid defense and held on to a three point lead at the half with the score being 31-28.
The Panthers tied the score early in the second half, 33-33, on a 3-point shot, then C.J. Hall and Gary Floyd scored back-to-back to put the 'Hounds up by 4.
The second half was nip and tuck for both teams, then Austin Danner hit a three pointer with 2 minutes left in the game to put the Greyhounds up for good.
"Several players gave valuable minutes during the game and made some key baskets and defensive stops to help with the win tonight, I like the fact that we struggled offensively and still stay focused on the defensive end and got the win, " said Coach Cook.
The Greyhounds shot 38 percent from the floor, making 20 of 53 field-goal attempts, and went 17 of 25 at the free-throw line. Leading the way for the Greyhounds in scoring was Austin Danner with 18 points off the bench and Prince Samuels added 14 points, also coming off the bench. Ray Ray Chase led the 'Hounds with 15 rebounds and the 'Hounds out rebounded the Panthers, 42-34.
"The fact that our leading scorers were off the bench tonight, says a lot about those young men to buy into the concept of team first and doing whatever it takes to contribute to help us be successful ," commented Coach Cook.
