After winning their home opener against Central Methodist JV, the Greyhounds went on the road to face Penn Valley CC, who came into the season ranked #8 in some pre-season polls.
"I thought that this would be a great test for our team, not only to gauge where we are at as far as how competitive we would be against a ranked team, but also to see how we would handle winning and then going on road against a quality Division II opponent," said Fort Scott head coach Michael Cook.
In the first half, the Greyhounds played great defense which allowed them to establish their transition game and have a lead at halftime of twelve points, 39-27.
In the second half, the Greyhounds continued with their great defense and pushed the lead to as many as twenty points. However, foul trouble for Ray Ray Chase and Prince Samuels, forced the Greyhounds to play more zone and not their standard man to man defense, which allows them to pressure the ball and to get into their transition offense.
The zone defense allowed Penn Valley to get back into the game and cut the twenty point deficit to as low as nine points during second half. But the Greyhounds never panicked and Chekeil Wright completed a three point play pushing the lead back to twelve points. The Greyhounds never were threatened after that.
Only three players scored in double figures for the Greyhounds. Leading the way for the Greyhounds were Sophomore Austin Danner with 20 points, Tyler Adams had 12, both coming off the bench. Gary Floyd chipped in with 11 points and Ray Ray Chase added 9 points, but also controlled the boards, grabbing 14 rebounds and 3 blocks.
"Again, several players stepped up and gave valuable minutes during the game when players were in foul trouble and made some key baskets and defensive stops to help with the win tonight, " Fort Scott head coach Michael Cook said.
The Greyhounds shot 58% from the field and 43% from the three point line, while committing only twelve turnovers which allowed the Greyhounds to close out the game and get the victory.
" This was big win for our team against an athletic team, that can press and get up and down the floor. We can't be satisfied with this win, we have to stay hungry and continue to grow," Fort Scott Head coach Michael Cook said.
