The Fort Scott Community College baseball team earned four more victories on the season while sweeping the Independence Community College Pirates over the weekend.
Game one saw the Greyhounds jump out to an 8-0 nothing lead heading into the fifth inning. Independence scored its lone run in the game in the fifth off an errant throw by a Greyhound fielder. Fort Scott put the game away in the sixth with a three run homerun by freshman, Ka'ai Tom. Freshman pitcher, Aaron Mason, from Broken Arrow, OK, had a scoreless sixth inning to end the game due to run rule. Mason allowed only three hits and struck out four Pirate batters for his seventh win of the year.
Game two saw much of the same pattern as Fort Scott had a 3-1 lead after the third inning. On the mound, sophomore Ryan Ahrens, from Denver, CO, allowed only four hits and one run in six innings while earning his fourth win of the year. Offensively, the Greyhounds exploded for four runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Freshman, Lance Barkley, and sophomore, Reyn Sugai, collected three hits apiece and accounted for eight of the team's 11 runs.
Game three had a different rhythm to the game. The Greyhounds found themselves down 4-2 heading into the fourth inning, but erupted for six runs with two outs in the inning to make the score 8-4. The offense tacked on another run in the fifth and seventh innings. On the mound, freshman, John Lynch threw the first 2 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits. Sophomore, Nick Kevlin threw a scoreless 4 1/3 innings in relief to finish the Pirates by a score of 10-4.
Game four entered the fifth inning with the score tied 2-2. Fort Scott blew the game open by scoring three runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth inning to make the game 10-3. Starting pitcher, freshman, Josh Griffith, threw 4+ innings, allowing 3 runs. Relievers Jeff Rousseau and Lance Barkley combined to throw the last three innings and the game finished with the score of 11-6. Offensively, the Greyhounds were paced by Lance Barkley's four hits, four runs scored, and two rbi's.
The Greyhounds are now 24-11 overall and 15-9 in conference play. They return to action this Saturday and Sunday for 1:00pm double headers both days at Lions Field in Fort Scott versus Labette County Community College.
