Head Coach John Hill III announced some changes to this coaching staff for the upcoming season.
Former assistant Coach, Patrick Deao, has stepped down to pursue a career as police officer and has begun his training at the Joplin Police Academy.
"We are sad to see Patrick move on, but we are excited for him as he has decided to pursue a new career. His efforts in recruiting last summer were instrumental in this year's incoming class so his effect on the program will continue even though he is no longer here. We wish Patrick the best of luck in his pursuit of being a police officer," said Coach Hill.
"I really enjoyed my time at Fort Scott. It was a great experience for me and I learned a lot of things that I will take with me in my future direction," Deao said.
With Deao's departure, Coach Hill announced the hiring of two new assistant coaches on his staff – Justin Sumner and Jared Walters.
Sumner comes to Fort Scott after spending last year as an assistant at Lawton State Community College in Birmingham, AL. He has also assisted with the Nevada (MO) Griffons the last 2 summers in the nationally lauded MINK League. While with the Griffons, Sumner coached with former Fort Scott assistant, Ryan Mansfield, and helped guide the Griffons to a third place finish in the NBC World Series. Sumner will work with hitters and outfield defense as well as be in charge of the baseball facility.
Walters comes to Fort Scott after spending last year at Simpson College, an NCAA D-III school located in Redding, CA. He also assisted with the Redding Colts .45's in the West Coast Collegiate League in Redding, CA working alongside former Major League Baseball players, Greg Cadaret and Denny Brugman. Walters will work with catchers, coordinate academics, and assist with strength and conditioning.
"Both Coach Sumner and Walters bring a young, energetic approach to the program. They are both highly motivated and knowledgeable coaches who will be great additions to this year's team," says Coach Hill.
Both assistants, Luke Demko and Ian Janes will be returning for their 2nd and 3rd years respectively with the program. Coach Demko will continue to be in charge of the pitchers as well as strength and conditioning and Coach Janes will continue to assist in all aspects of the program.
